023: Uncertainty

These are definitely some uncertain times for everyone. Not just in our industry and not just in our country. The big things I was worried about last week don’t seem to matter as much, they’re not even on the radar. I’m sure we’re all feeling something similar. With how quickly the situation evolved last week - it escalated much faster than anyone was expecting. The decisions you made that one day seemed extreme, suddenly seemed like an under-reaction the following day, trying to stay ahead of everything was impossible.

Events like this are few and far between, but they do change our lives quickly and can alter the landscape for years going forward. We’re still in the middle of this and like you, I’m still trying to figure things out. It will be sometime before it feels like we’re on solid ground to move forward. One thing is certain though - when we get through this, there will be a new normal going forward. And with that we have an opportunity to evolve ourselves. 

Our health and safety is the most important thing right now, I know that is the focus for everyone - and it should be. But in these uncertain times, have an opportunity to look at how we move forward with our new normal. Not only with our career itself, but how it affects the world around us. 

I think we’re all going to have some time on our hands over then next few weeks and months. We have a chance to look at the world through a new set of lenses. You may see things in a new way, you may be able to move forward in a different direction now that the status quo has been changed. When life is simply rolling along, we can fall into routines - it becomes more about ‘what’ we are doing, and less about ‘why’ we are doing it. With uncertainty comes opportunity, a chance to reconnect with our values and look for the ‘why’. None of us know what the next few months will hold and that’s ok, don’t forget to look for the inspiration in the chaos.
